Attention all iPhone Users – Update Your Phone Now

Do you have an iPhone? If so, you need to know about a really invasive “spyware” vulnerability that has just been discovered in the iPhone iOS.

This serious zero-day exploit dubbed “Trident” by Citizen Lab and mobile security firm Lookout, has just been patched by Apple as of August 25, 2016.

Don’t Ignore This One

This vulnerability could allow malicious players to read your texts, emails, track your location, and take over your phone’s camera and microphone – its purpose is to turn your personal phone into a portable spy that seriously compromises your personal data.

So What Should You Do?

First, check the iOS version your phone is running – go to:

Settings > General > About > Version

If your version is iOS 9.3.5. – you’re good to go! If not, you need to update. The good news is that it is easy to install an update. Apple gives options on installing updates, and they are all simple and straightforward. Just go to their instructions if you are not sure how to do it.

Also, before you click on any email or text message on your phone – make sure it’s coming from a reliable source. If you are not sure, just don’t click !

So How Was This Discovered?

Interestingly, this vulnerability was discovered by a tip from a United Arab Emirates (UAE) human rights defender Ahmed Mansoor when he received a text message on his iPhone promising “new secrets” about detainees tortured in UAE jails. Fortunately, as he knows he is a hacker target, he did not click on the text message. Instead, he contacted Citizen Lab researchers, who worked with security firm Lookout and Apple to uncover the iOS flaw. Apple responded immediately with an appropriate patch.
